Lila Strayer (Herbert) - Class Of 1940

Longtime West Seattleite Lila Merle Herbert, 74 of Centralia died Tuesday, October 31, 1995, at Providence Hospital in Centralia. Death was due to complication of sugar diabetes, heart disease, congestive heart failure, coming to ahead following a broken hip. She was born December 30, 1920 in McCook, Nebraska to Ernest Austin and Mayme Frances (Davis) Strayer, the fifth of seven children. Lila is the granddaughter of Cyrus "Henry" & Margaret Ellen (Niceschwander) Strayer, great granddaughter of Miley & Elmira Strayer, and 2nd great granddaughter of Martin & Rachel (Raylla) Strayer. On March 10, 1941, she married Earl Edward Herbert in Oberlin, Kansas. To this union were born six children-five sons and one daughter. They spent the years 1941 through 1960 living in Nebraska, Oregon and Colorado, moving to West Seattle in August of 1960, then to Findlay, Ohio in 1983. They moved to Arapahoe, Nebraska in 1987, then to Centralia in 1989. She attended the Assembly of God Church before her health began to fail. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Earl on April 14, 1992; son Gerry Lee on June 24, 1989; granddaughter Kristin Sue Herbert on March 14, 1982; sisters Phyllis June Thomas and Shirley Ann Havins; and brothers Clarence Cyrus, Archie Austin, Harold Arthur, and Raymond Eugene Strayer. Left to mourn her loss are daughter Rosanna June Whitted (husband Dennis) of Centralia; sons Darrell Edward (wife Jeri) and Alden Daniel of Seattle, Rodney Gene (Jill) of Sevierville, Tennessee, and Michael Merlyn (Sue) of Centralia, nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, November 3, at West Seattle Assembly of God Church under the direction of Rev. Larry Bentz of Seattle and Rev. George Page of Centralia. Interment and graveside services were held at Abbey View Memorial Park in Brier, Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Gideon's.
