Wayne Goodenberger - Class Of 1939

 

Wayne Goodenberger, 82, died Thursday (Aug. 15, 2002) at Community Hospital of McCook. He was born on Feb. 16, 1920, at Ocean Beach, Calif., to Bert A. and Grace (Nelson) Goodenberger. The family came back to Nebraska soon after his birth. He grew up in the McCook area and graduated in 1939 from McCook High School. He worked for Railway Express and was a brakeman for CB & Q for over eight years before serving in the Navy during World War II. Upon discharge from the Navy he farmed the rest of his life south of Indianola. On March 23, 1940, he married Maxine Huet at the Methodist Church in McCook. He was a 50 year member of both the Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He was also a member of Eastern Star; Family Frolic Square Dance Club; and the Good Sam's Camping Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; two brothers, Gilbert and Marvin Goodenberger; and one sister, Della. Survivors include wife, Maxine of McCook; three sons, DeWayne and wife, Jan Goodenberger of McCook, Raymond and wife, Margaret Goodenberger of Hershey and Lynn and wife, Jolene Goodenberger of Omaha; one daughter Janice and husband, Eldon Walters of North Platte; two brothers, John Goodenberger and Phillip Goodenberger; two sisters, Phyllis Davis and Geneva Rouse; two sister-in-laws, Mary Ellen Goodenberger and Margaret Hunter: 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a Masonic and military committal service
