Gene Klein (Engen) - Class Of 1938

Gene Mildred (Klein) Engen Tuesday, August 8, 2006 Jan. 4, 1921 - July 28, 2006 MADISON, Tenn. -- Gene Mildred (Klein) Engen, 85, died July 28, 2006 in Tennessee. She was born in McCook to Jake L. and Anna L. (Seiffert) Klein. She attended school in McCook and graduated from McCook High School where she played the flute and piccolo and was an accomplished singer and pianist. She also was involved with the All Girl's Orchestra and Choir in the 1940s, a popular radio show in the McCook area. She completed her nursing training at Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago, Ill., earning her R.N. degree. She worked at several hospitals, doctor's offices and in private duty nursing, including at Mary Lanning Hospital. She then moved to California where she attended school to become a lab and x-ray technician. She met Floyd Engen there and they returned to McCook where they married. They made their home in Boulder, Colo., from 1948-1968. In 1968 she moved to the Nashville, Tenn., area and continued her nursing career at Madison Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marian Klein and brother, Corvin Klein. Survivors include her children, Butch, Susan and Anne, who live in the Nashville area, and Debbie, who lives in Oklahoma; a brother, Richard Klein and wife, Barbara of McCook; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were July 31, 2006 at Hermitage Funeral Home in Old Hickory, Tenn. Interment was in the Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
