Lecia Kidd (Potthoff) - Class Of 1958

Lecia LaVonne Potthoff age 73,was born on Oct. 26, 1939, and passed away on Oct. 11, 2013, at Hillcrest Nursing Home after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Omaha and came to McCook at the age of seven to live with her parents, John A. (Jack) and Gladys (Hein) Kidd. As a child she was baptized and confirmed at the United Memorial Methodist Church in McCook. She graduated from McCook High School in 1957. Lecia worked at the family business, Jack Kidd Pharmacy. She attended McCook Community College and then worked for the telephone company. On Aug. 9, 1959, she was united in marriage to Wayne L. Potthoff. To this union three children were born: Katherine, Jane, and Susan. The family lived east of McCook where they farmed and raised cattle. Lecia volunteered as a 4-H leader She was on a 4-H curriculum writing team. She also taught adults knitting and crocheting through classes offered through the college and craft stores. Lecia was very active for many years organizing and operating the annual Coat Closet in McCook. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, reading, and following the Nebraska Cornhusker football and volleyball teams. For many years she spent time with her children and grandchildren at 4-H horse and dog programs for shows and practices. She was a member of the United Memorial Methodist Church and later the First Congregational Church in McCook. She was very active as Sunday school superintendent, youth choir director, adult choir member, deacon, board of Christian education, Bible study leader and participant, and member of women's fellowship. She was a former member of Chapter GY of P.E.O. She operated the Gift's Galore craft cooperative store in McCook for a number of years. Preceding her in death are her husband, Wayne L. Potthoff, on Nov. 30, 1989 and her parents, John A. (Jack) and Gladys (Hein) Kidd. Survivors include three daughters: Katherine Potthoff of Lincoln, Jane and husband, Shad Dewey of McCook and Susan Potthoff and fiancé, Scott Mustion of McCook. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Derek and wife, Shelly, Easton and Paige Rupp of Victoria, Kansas, Frank and wife, Katie, Chevie, Carlie, and Cooper Rupp of McCook and Nicole Dewey of McCook. Lecia is also survived by lifelong friend, Annie Morse of McCook. Services will be Friday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with graveside inurnment at Memorial Park Cemetery. Associate Pastor Alicia Parde will officiate the services following. There is no visitation. Memorials can be made to Nebraska Children's Home, American Cancer Society, and Red Willow 4-H Council. Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
