Suzanne DeVeny (Burton) - Class Of 1954

Suzanne Deveny Burton passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at her rural Bartley home. She was born on October 4, 1934 in McCook, NE to Charles (Chic) and Iva Coe Deveny. Suzanne graduated from McCook High School. She was united in marriage to Don Russell Burton at the McCook Christian Church on June 6, 1954 . Except for a short time period when Don worked on the railroad in Denver, they made their home in Bartley Nebraska. She and Don started Burton Well Drilling some 62 years ago where her duties included secretary, bookkeeper, office manager, and even truck driver on occasion. For 27 years, they would spend the colder months in Donna, TX where they both volunteered for Children’s Haven International which supports the Refugio Internacional de Niños children’s home in Reynosa, Mexico. Don would drive a tour bus that would visit the children’s home in Mexico and Suzie organized and volunteered at a thrift store, sold vegetables and helped with other fundraising functions in support of the children’s home. On many occasions, they headed south with a trailer packed full of items donated by Nebraskan’s for the thrift store. Another highlight each year was participation with other Winter Texans in a Christmas party for the children of Nuevo Progreso held in Nuevo Progreso Mexico. Suzie was a member of Bartley Christian Church, First Christian Church in Donna TX and McCook Christian Church. Through the years, she was active in the Bartley Christian Church, Eastern Star, on the board for Hillcrest Nursing Home, and a Mother Advisor for Rainbow Girls, Suzie enjoyed traveling, riding motorcycles, boating, flying with Don in their airplanes, her children, grandchildren, her children’s 4-H activities, horses, dogs, going to auctions, collecting antiques, and playing cards with friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Charles and Iva Coe Deveny, her husband of 63 yrs, Don Russel Burton who passed in 2017, infant daughter Rosalie Burton who passed in1962, and brother Guy Glen Ashmore She leaves behind her four children, Cynthia Sue and Gary Haag of Bandera TX, Ivy Dawn and Pat Stritt of Bartley, (Donald) David and Cindy Burton, of Raymond NB, Mary Jo and Duane Teter of Bartley and eight grandchildren, Blaine and wife Tracie Haag, Jessica and husband Heath Bortner, Garrett and wife Emily Haag, Gabriel and wife Kristine Stritt, Samuel and wife Bethany Stritt, Josh Burton, Brandon Burton, and Haley Teter and fourteen great grandchildren: Taylor Haag Connor Haag, Parker Haag, Ethan Charles Bortner, Kylea Stritt, Mitchel Stritt, Russell Stritt, Charlotte Stritt, Jude Burton, Millie Burton, Tessa Burton, Charlie Burton and Lane Teter In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Willow Christian Church in Indianola or the McCook Humane Society. A memorial service will be held at the Willow Christian Church in Indianola with Pastor Clark Bates officiating on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 2:00 PM. A private inurrnment at the Bartley cemetery will be held at a future date. Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook entrusted with the arrangements.
