COLBY, Kan. - Nanette (French) Baumfalk, 90, of Colby, passed away Feb. 13, 2024. She shared her birth with her twin brother Robert H. French Jr. They were born in McCook, Neb. to Robert Hollingsworth French Sr. and Mabel (Weeks) French on Oct. 8, 1933.

She was baptized at the United Methodist Church and Installed into the Order of Rainbow Girls Assembly #11 and became a Worthy Advisor in January 1951. She attended McCook High School and graduated with the class of 1951.

After graduation she worked at Brooks Jewelry Store before uniting in marriage to Virgil R. Baumfalk in June 1952. She spent the greater part of her life moving to different states while Virgil furthered his education to become a teacher. To this union were born five children Nancy, Gary, Sherry, Terrea and Virgil Jr.

Herndon, Kan. was home for the family for eleven years where Virgil taught school and she taught Art for his classes. After leaving Herndon, there were moves to Texas, Iowa and back to Atwood, Kan. to live on the farm where all five children finished school.

While living in Atwood she had worked at the Rawlins County Square Deal and Rawlins County Clerk’s office. After moving to Colby in 2002, she worked at Sears, the Thomas County Recycling Center and the Whistle Stop RV Park and Antique Shop.

She was an amazing artist and enjoyed creating artwork for many family and friends. She also enjoyed volunteering in her free time and had served on the Atwood Art Council, she was a Girl Scout Leader in Herndon and a Sunday School teacher in Herndon and Atwood. She also volunteered at the Colby Visitor’s Center for five years.

Nanette was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil Baumfalk Sr.; son Virgil Baumfalk Jr.; granddaughter Dusty Dawn McKenzie; great -granddaughter McKenzie Christensen; brother William French and twin brother Robert French, II.

She is survived by her children, Nancy (Jack) McKenzie of McCook, Neb., Gary (Yvonne) Baumfalk of Colby, Sherry McDonald of Colby, and Terrea (Andrew) Wakefield of Colby; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous friends and family.
