Velda Ruth Cappel passed away Thursday, November 11, 2021 at United Living Community in Brookings, SD. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Brookings V.F.W. The family invites everyone to join for a light lunch following the celebration of life.

Velda was born to Melvin and Ruth Godwin on October 24, 1930 in Kansas. When she was five years old, the family moved to Nebraska where Velda graduated from McCook High School.

She married Clarence Cappel in McCook, Nebraska. There, they were blessed with the first of three children. In 1958, they moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where they had two more daughter and continued to raise their family.

Velda's life was kept busy working as a bookkeeper for many years at the Brookings Coast to Coast store. She was a lifetime member the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion serving in various leadership roles. Velda stayed busy with a variety of activities that go along with living on a small acreage south of Brookings.

She is survived by her five children: Terry Cappel of Arlington SD; Larry Cappel of Louisville, CO; Jerry Cappel of Louisville, KY; Kerry Cappel of Brookings, SD; and Sherry Cappel of Loveland, CO. She is also survived by her six grandchildren and her seven great grandchildren.

Velda was preceded in death by Clarence Cappel in 1990, and by her sisters June and Dorothy.
