Shirley Jean Johnson

March 14, 1927 - July 9, 2018

McCOOK, Neb. — Shirley Jean Johnson, 91, passed away July 9, 2018, at Brookdale Assisted Living in McCook.

Shirley was born March 14, 1927, in McCook to Carl and Amanda Axelson. She graduated from McCook High School in the spring of 1944.

On Aug. 10, 1945, Shirley was united in marriage to Milton M. Johnson in the United Methodist Church of McCook. While Milton was serving in the Army Air Corps and based in Utah, Shirley served in the Civil Service Administration. She served as a Sunday School teacher at First Congregational Church and was a 4-H leader with Buttons and Bows Club.

She was a major supporter of her children’s activities: Boy Scouts, 4-H and band. Shirley was co-owner of McCook Flying Service with Milton from 1966 until Milton’s death on Nov. 19, 1982. She worked at Walmart where she started as greeter in 1998 and retired as cashier in 2013. As a result, she received a “15 Year of Dedicated Service” award. She loved and enjoyed volunteering as a Bison Newsletter representative for the Class of 1944 because it allowed her to keep in touch with her classmates. Her hobbies included spending time at the McCook Library as she had an avid love and passion for history and current affairs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Amanda Axelson; husband, Milton Johnson; brothers, Tore Axelson and Kjell Axelson; and sister, Evelyn (Taylor) Tackels.

Shirley is survived by daughter, Susan Fischer of Flower Mound, Texas; son, Jay Johnson (Bonnie) of Wichita, Kan.; and daughter, Nancy Dunn of Flower Mound; five grandchildren, Mike Fischer (Irma) of Frisco, Texas, Amy Ryan (Tim) of Elkridge, Md., Jennifer Sipple (Chris) of Rockwall, Texas, Jeffrey Dunn (Megan) of Cypress, Texas, Travis Johnson (Amanda) of Wright City, Mo.; six great-grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Fischer of Frisco, Texas, Sofia and Liam Ryan of Elkridge, Md., and Cameron and Baby Dunn of Cypress, Texas; and brother, William Axelson of Denver, Colo.

Viewing for Shirley will be Friday, July 13, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with family present 5 to 7 p.m.

Services will be Saturday, July 14, 2018, 11 a.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Dave Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Memorials may be given in her name to the McCook Public Library.

Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel.
