RODRIGUEZ, Helen Ruth
Age 91, passed away March 22, 2010, at her home in Palmdale. She was born October 1, 1918, in McCook, Nebraska and moved to the Antelope Valley in 1965. Ruth was a modern young woman traveling to St. Louis to attend Chillicothe Business College at the age of seventeen. After working in St. Louis and Indianapolis her best friend from McCook invited her to move to Playa Del Rey. While working in downtown LA she met her future husband, Louis Rodriguez. They were married for 62 years; he preceded her in death in 2004. Before arriving in the Antelope Valley, Ruth was employed at McClellan Air Force Base during World War II. After the war she was a typical 1950's/1960's housewife, busy raising kids, cooking; was an avid reader and enjoyed mowing her own lawn. In 1969, she became a local business owner in Lancaster, starting Century Dry Cleaners located on Avenue J, which she operated with her husband for over 10 years. After the sale of the dry cleaners in 1979, she was not ready to retire yet, and designed her home in Quartz Hill and assisted in the opening of their hardware store in San Diego. In her later years, she never missed a party, even when her hip was broken. She had plenty of men to carry her around the party. She stuck by her Democratic ideals while living in a mostly Republican community. During the last 8 years of her life, she resided in her daughter's guest house in Quartz Hill. Everyone knew Grandma was always available to go for a car ride irrespective of the time of day. Her plethora of knowledge and politics always outwit everyone. She is survived by two children, Curtis Rodriguez and Deborah Rice-Lang; son-in-law Michael Lang and two grandchildren, Allison and Jacob Rice. She was a great mom and grandma. She was much loved and will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 p.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010, 6202 West Avenue N. Arrangements entrusted to Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be made to Antelope Valley Community Clinic.
