John Gettman - Class Of 1959

GETTMAN, John William Mr. John William Gettman died suddenly, but peacefully at home on Friday, June 10, 2005. John was born November 16, 1940 in McCook, Nebraska to Henry and Margaret Gettman. He was the only son from a Russian immigrant family. John married his high school sweetheart, Corlyn, on September 16, 1960 in Denver, Colorado. He moved to Santa Barbara in 1963 and took a position with Santa Barbara Research and also, Hi-Time Liquors. On February 23, 1966 he was blessed with his first child, his beloved daughter Kristen Marie. On May 19, 1970 he received a second blessing, a son John Henry. He also became the owner of Fotoscreen Printing in Goleta. He ran that business for the last 35 years. In 1993 John moved to Orcutt and became an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Santa Maria Elks and donated time to the Senior Program and Meals on Wheels. John was a wonderful husband and father. His family was his life. He coached his son John Henry's AYSO soccer's teams and never missed a game in the 20 years his son played. He was a father figure to many of his children's friends, always there for advice or friendly talks. John was blessed four more times with his three grandsons Jordan, Gabriel and Gavin and his beloved granddaughter Brianna. His grandchildren made the last years of life the most enriched time in his life. John Gettman will be missed by many, but especially his family who have lost more than a husband, father and grandfather; they have lost a friend, confidant and mentor. John is survived by his wife Corlyn of Orcutt, daughter Kristen Gettman-Kenney of Newport Beach, formerly Santa Barbara, son John Henry Gettman and his wife Rosie of Santa Barbara, granddaughter Brianna Kenney of Santa Barbara, grandsons Jordan Kenney, Gabe Gettman and Gavin Gettman all of Santa Barbara. Also surviving are his sister Joanne Eschelman and husband Evertt of Denver, Colorado, brother and sister-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 17, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with Reverend Mary Goshert officiating. Private cremation and private inurnment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Community Action Commission, Senior Nutrition Program or Marian Meals on Wheels.
