Richard "Dick" Best - Class Of 1961

Richard 'Dick' Best Monday, July 25, 2005 April 25, 1942-July 17, 2005 OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Richard Lee "Dick" Best, 63, died July 17, 2005, after fighting colon cancer for six months. He was born April 25, 1942, in Forest City, Iowa, to Frank and Bertha (Kennedy) Best and grew up in McCook. Prior to his graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His tour of duty was extended by one year and he supported United States' interests during the Cuban missile crisis. His ship took part in the blockade of Cuba and forced a Russian submarine to turn back to Russia. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Kennedy Best and a brother, Ronald. Survivors include his children, Nicole Beck, Richard Campbell and Terrance Campbell; his father, Frank Best of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Robert Best of Texas and Tom Best of Omaha; two sisters, Marilyn Best and Terry Sue Bowlby , both of Oklahoma City. His remains will be interred at the Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron where his grandmother is interred Source of information: McCook Daily Gazette McCook, NE
