McCOOK, Neb. -- Virginia Mae Brown, age 75, of McCook, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at Bryan Medical Center East in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Virginia was born April 3, 1939, in McCook to parents John Jr. and Mary (Roth) Uhrich. She was an only child. Virginia attended McCook High School, graduating in 1957. After high school, she attended McCook Junior College for two years, and then Kearney State College and University of Northern Colorado.

On Oct. 24, 1959, Virginia married Merlin Brown at the German Congregational Church in McCook. The couple was blessed with one daughter, Julie.

Prior to marriage, Virginia worked at Hershberger Music. In 1959, she began teaching at a country school south of Trenton. From 1960-1968, Virginia taught at Beverly. In 1968, Julie was born and Virginia spent the next 14 years as a homemaker. She resumed her career as a teacher in 1982 at District 8, teaching music for several years.

Virginia was a member of the McCook Matinée Music Club. She played the organ or piano for many weddings, funerals and at church. She even played the accordion on occasion. Virginia baked many wedding cakes throughout the years. She served as the treasurer of the McCook Gardening Club and enjoyed planting flowers and gardening. Virginia was very involved as a member of the Norris Avenue Chapel. She served as the Sunday School superintendent and regularly taught Sunday school over the years.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Merlin Brown, and her daughter, Julie (Vincent) Winans of Syracuse, Utah.

Visitation will be Monday, March 16, 2015, from 1 to 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

A funeral service will be Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at 10:30 am at Norris Avenue Chapel in McCook with Pastors Emmanuel Reinbold and Johnny Walker officiating.

Burial will follow the funeral service in Memorial Park Cemetery, also located in McCook.
