Ernest was born on Aug. 25, 1938, on a farm near Culbertson to parents, Darwin C. and Laura L. (Abbott) Markwad. He attended grade school at rural District No. 8. He graduated from McCook High School in 1956, which was the very first class to graduate out of the new high school.

On July 30, 1956, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged on July 29, 1962.

Ernest was united in marriage to Teraline L. Felker at St. John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson on May 5, 1963. They eventually made their home on a farm north of Culbertson, where together they raised hogs until Ernest health prevented him from working.

Ernest followed football and was an avid book lover. His favorite hobby, however, was woodworking. His talents were many and he was accomplished in anything he created.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Darwin and Laura Markwad; father and mother-in-law, Harold and Loretta Felker; sister and brother-in-law, Jacki and Ron McKillip; and brother, Donald "Butch" Markwad.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Teraline Markwad of Culbertson; nieces, Sandy and husband, Bill McConville and family of Culbertson and Laura and husband, Dave Klaus, of Portland, Oregon; and numerous friends and neighbors.

Memorials may be given in his name.

The family will honor Ernest wishes that his body will be cremated with no services.

Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook is in charge of the arrangements.
