Harry “Stewart” Corns

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- Harry “Stewart” Corns, age 81 of North Platte, passed away Thursday Jan. 4, 2018.

“Stew” was born on Dec. 11, 1936 in Cambridge, NE to Erman Edward and Virgie (Scott) Corns. The family moved to McCook in his early childhood and he graduated from McCook High School in 1954. He married Dorothy Mae Lennemann on June 16, 1956. After graduation he studied for one year at McCook Junior College and was Shop Forman for Reynolds Oldsmobile/Cadillac in McCook. On June 16, 1958 he was sworn in as an officer in the Nebraska State Patrol. He was drafted into the army in 1960 and after basic training he served for in Fort Knox, KY and Nuremberg, Germany. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to the Patrol where he served for 37 years in Scottsbluff, Kimball, Chadron, Grand Island, and North Platte. In 1976 he graduated from a general course of instruction at the FBI National Academy United States Department of Justice in Quantico, VA. He retired from the State Patrol at the rank of Captain in 1995. After his retirement, Stewart worked as a private security officer for the Social Security offices in North Platte. He was an avid reader and spent many happy hours of his retirement picking out books at the Public Library. He also spent time socializing with friends over morning coffee and following Nebraska Cornhusker Football.

Stewart is survived by his wife Dorothy; his two children, Linda (Corns) Pfenning and Greg Corns; his two granddaughters, Rebecca Pfenning and Alaina Pfenning-Butterworth; his niece, Karen Hunter; cousins Sandy Shaerer and Gene Stark; and many friends and former colleagues.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the North Platte Public Library and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com. A Rosary Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 9, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Reverend Josh Brown as celebrant. Burial will follow at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with military honors. Those wishing to do so may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 9, 2018 at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
