McCOOK, Neb. -- Rex E. Poore of McCook, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014 at Community Hospital. He was 81 years old.

Rex was born on March 3, 1933, in Red Willow County, Nebraska, to parents William Forrest and Mildred Devona (Modrell) Poore. He graduated from McCook High School in 1951 and continued his education at McCook Junior College.

He entered the U.S. Army on April 23, 1953, and served during the Korean War. His mother taught him to cook at an early age, which served him well as a cook in the Army. He was honorably discharged on April 8, 1955.

He played football for the Army and McCook Junior College, where he fell in love with a beautiful first-year student, Jeanette Hardy. They were young and in love and married on March 9, 1953. To this union, four children were born. They were blessed with 61 years of happy marriage until God called him home.

Rex was a big warm fellow who truly loved life, God, his family, and friends. A prime example of a Midwestern man, he could be ornery but was completely honest, caring, generous, and always willing to lend his large hand wherever it was needed. Rex loved to do woodworking, tend his garden, go fishing and be outdoors. Throughout his different careers as a salesman of agriculture seeds and insurance, his gregarious nature brought him success. But family and community always came first and no sacrifice was too much for him. What gave him the most joy in life was being in the middle of his big, bustling family swarming all around him. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are going to miss him very much.

Preceding him in death was his parents; three brothers, Don, William, and Charles "Wayne" Poore; and two sisters, Bonnie Jean and Marjorie.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Poore of McCook; two sons, Rick and wife, Jo, of Lincoln and Joel Poore and wife, Brynne, of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Beth O'Hanlon of Lincoln and Andrea Baughman of Chanute, Kansas; brother, Dale Poore and wife, Peggy, of McCook; sister, Mary Ann Tardiff and wife, Ron, of Alamogordo, New Mexico; sisters-in-law, Mary Poore and Edna Poore of McCook; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.
