McCOOK, Nebraska -- Robert G. Carlson, age 81, of McCook, died Oct. 2, 2013, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

He was born in McCook on Aug. 16, 1932, to W. LeRoy and Matilda Mae (Schlecht) Carlson. Robert attended and graduated from the McCook High School in 1949. He was confirmed in the Peace Lutheran Church in 1948.

In January of 1953 he joined the US Army, served in Korea and received an honorable discharge in January 1955.

Robert was a farmer at heart, working on the family farm. He worked for BSB in Curtis, Nebraska, from 1985 until 2005. He was a heavy equipment operator, moving soil to build terraces in fields. He spent five years working for Schaffert Manufacturing in Indianola, assembling equipment.

In 2007, he was diagnosed with cancer. Robert was active in his church life and he taught a special ministry on Sundays for the mentally challenged. He was a board member for over 38 Years for SWATS (1978 until just recently), resigning his position due to failing health.

He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, and a former member of the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert is survived by his sister, Lois Mae Calvin; two brothers, Rolland and Harold and wife, Sue Carlson, all of McCook; four nieces and nephews; six great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Robert will be on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Albertson officiating. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery of McCook.

Memorials may be left in his name to either the KNGN Radio station or the American Cancer Society.

Visitation will be Friday afternoon, from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
