On Oct. 25, 2013, Gladys Lorraine Bell Johnson died after years of struggling with Alzheimer’s. She was 85.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne E. Johnson, 89, of Greeley; sibling, Gleni Kessel of Fort Collins; children, Howard Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., Stanley Johnson (Tina) of Titusville, Fla., Gaye Johnson Woullard of Westminster and Rosanne Johnson of Denver; grandchildren, Rachel Lorraine Johnson of Titusville, Fla., Renee Johnson of Titusville, Fla., Clayton Woullard of Denver and Adam Woullard of Chicago. Gladys was preceded in death by her younger brother, Robert Bell.

She was born on March 15, 1928, in Kenosha, Wis., to Glen and Anna Bell and raised in McCook, Neb. Her parents were dairy farmers and bought a farm along the Republican River at McCook, Neb. Gladys’s father, Glen, drowned in the flood of the Republican River in 1935.

Gladys graduated from McCook High School in 1946 and attended the junior college in McCook. She then attended a medical technician college in Minneapolis, Minn. She got her first job as a lab technician in a hospital in Logansport, Ind., where she met Wayne Johnson. She and Wayne married on Jan. 1, 1950, at the Methodist Church in McCook. She was a stay-at-home mother.

Gladys was one of the original volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels in Greeley, which started in 1970. She and Wayne were volunteer drivers for a combined total of 41 years. Gladys was an active member of the Newcomers Club and was their president for one year. Gladys also served as a welcome wagon lady. Her hobbies were golf, bridge, quilting, needle point and she was an avid gardener. She was known for saying what she meant and meaning what she said and always had a good sense of humor.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church of Greeley with a reception to follow.
