BETTY JANE HOYT was born on a farm near McCook, NE on January 18, 1926 to Dean Willard and Emma (George) Hoyt. She worked with her father until she graduated from high school in McCook.

Betty was employed in Civil Service with the Federal Government and was transferred to Japan where she worked in Intelligence and had Top Secret Security Clearance. During Betty’s residence in Japan, she met and married Paul L. Carlson. They had one daughter, Rebecca Hoyt Carlson. Betty and Paul obtained their individual private pilot’s licenses and purchased a single engine plane. Betty was the first woman in Japan to fly ‘solo’.

After spending ten years in Japan, she moved to Los Angeles, CA and filed for divorce. She continued her employment in Civil Service with the Federal Government until her retirement at age 65. Betty lived in Southern CA, San Antonio, TX, Northern, CA,, and then moved to Hettinger, ND in 2004 to be closed to Rebecca.

Betty was independent, lived life to its fullest, and never let anything or anyone stand in her way. She had a colorful way of expressing herself and created a grin or laugh from those who knew her and knew of her.

She passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Hoyt, Lemmon, SD.
