Vernon (Bud) Manker - Class Of 1939

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Vernon “Bud” Oliver Manker passed away Jan. 13, 2018, at Evelyn’s House Hospice in Creve Coeur, Mo. He was 97 years old.

Vernon was born on June 20, 1920, at Estancia, N.M., to Claude E. Manker and Myrtle I. (Whismore) Manker. Vernon grew up in McCook, Neb., graduating from McCook High School in 1939. He graduated Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Ill., in 1941. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps from May 1942 and until December 1945. He entered the US. Naval Reserve during the Korean War, serving from January 1950 until April 1953. Vernon was honorably discharged from both branches of service.

On Feb. 16, 1945, he was united in marriage to Laura Caroline Schutz at Mobile, Ala. To this union four children were born. Vernon and Laura spent most of their married years living in St. Louis Co., Mo. They moved to Loup City, Neb., in 1983 and McCook in 1996.

Vernon was a 71-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and spent his working career as a licensed electrician. He worked in Mexico, Cuba and much of his career at the American Can Company in St. Louis, retiring in 1981. Vernon was an avid photographer and reader, and enjoyed traveling the United States, Canada and Spain.

In 2012, Vernon moved to Poplar Bluff, Mo., and later to the John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Medical Center Home in Poplar Bluff.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Laura, on Feb. 2, 2003; his parents and three sisters; Marie Rowe, Marjorie Curl, and LaVern (Vernie) Harrison Hoyt.

Survivors include three sons and one daughter; Mike Manker and wife, Neva and Tom Manker of Indianola, Ne., Jim Manker of Missouri and Joy Richter and husband, Floyd of McCook. Vernon also leaves behind six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vernon’s wish was to be cremated and inurnment will be in the Indianola “Indian Hills” Cemetery with a private service at a later date. Condolences may be sent to Joy Richter, 809 West Second St., McCook, NE 69001.
