Dale Steele - Class Of 1939

Arthur Dale Steele, 92, of Lincoln, died Thursday (1-3-13). Born (8-19-20) in Hebron to Arthur Twain and Buelah Fay (Hendershot) Steele. Entered the U.S. Army in February 1941 and completed cadet training as a bombardier at Midland, Texas in April 1943. Completed 30 missions with Crew #1. 712th Bomb Squadron 448th Bomb Group in June 1944. Of the 60 crews that went to England in December of 1943, only ten completed their mission requirements. Mustered out in September 1945. After a stint as a civilian photographer, volunteered to return to the U.S. Air Force for the Korean War. Flew with the 345th Squadron 98th Bomb Wing in B-29's, and retired in September 1967 as a Major with 27 years service.

In the ensuing years, among other duties, served as an airborne controller in EC-121's on Cape Cod, Mass. and as a Manpower Officer. After retirement, worked for 14 years as a claims deputy of the State of Nebraska retiring for good in 1982. In retirement, Art traveled widely and enjoyed many pursuits. He never lost interest in others or his pride and enjoyment in his family. He lived in Lincoln for the last 13 years at Legacy Terrace.

Art is survived by his son, Robert (Patricia) Steele, Omaha; daughters, Sydney (Rick) Kolb, Lincoln, Leslie (Randy) Flynn, Lakewood, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; son, Don R. Steele and daughter, Jean Ellen Conor.
